What Is Documented
Most pages about Dragon Tiger's history are invented: Tang Dynasty origins, painted tiles, world championships, an 18th-century Macau casino scene that did not exist. None of it cites a source, because there is none. This is what can be traced to a regulator, an operator, a game studio, or a dated statement by its author.

Read across that table and the shape of the game's history is clear: it is an online history. The first document naming the game is a 2012 analysis; the first studio to announce a live table did so in early 2018; every dated milestone since is a studio release or a regulator approving an online or resort variant. Whatever happened on card tables before 2012 left no record that a regulator, operator or academic has published.
The Cambodia Claim
“Dragon Tiger originated in Cambodia in the early 2000s”
This sentence appears on hundreds of casino websites and, since 2025, in AI-generated search summaries that cite those websites. We could not trace it to any regulator, operator, academic study or government record. Its earliest datable ancestor is the 2012 Wizard of Odds line that the game was “rumored to be found in Cambodia.” Later pages removed “rumored,” added a decade, and in some cases invented Han Dynasty or Tang Dynasty roots to go with it. We do not state the Cambodia origin as fact, and we recommend treating any page that does, without a source, as decoration.
What the ethnographic literature does show is telling in a different way. Field studies of Cambodia's border-casino towns, of Vietnamese gamblers crossing into Bavet, and of Thai gamblers in Poipet list the games on the floor as baccarat, blackjack, roulette and slots. Baccarat dominates every account. Dragon Tiger does not appear in the studies we located, which does not prove it was absent from those floors, only that nobody who wrote them down saw fit to name it.
Where It Is Dealt on Land
Presence today is documented, because casinos publish their game lists. Three operators publish Dragon Tiger rules on their own websites, and their rules do not agree with one another.

Two Cambodian rooms on the same border disagree about which card is highest. That is what an undocumented game looks like from the inside: the rules travel by dealer, not by rulebook. Online, by contrast, every studio ranks the Ace low.
Macau is the notable absence. Under the Macau Gaming Law a concessionaire may offer only games on the pre-approved list or games the Government has since approved, with each game's rules approved by the Secretary for Economy and Finance on the DICJ's recommendation at a concessionaire's request. The 32-game pre-approved list, as restated in a 2019 Practical Law survey by the Macau firm MdME, runs from Baccarat and Casino War to Fantan, Cussec, Fortune 8 and Dragon/Phoenix, and Dragon Tiger is not on it under any spelling. Dragon/Phoenix is a different baccarat-family game. Macau's regulator publishes revenue by game type each quarter, and Dragon Tiger is not a tracked type.
Studio Variants Compared
Online Dragon Tiger differs more between studios than baccarat does. The same bet can carry a 10.36% edge at one table and 32.77% at the next, purely on the Tie payout. Rules below are from each studio's own page; “not stated” means the page is silent. Edges are computed at eight decks and explained in full on the Odds & Payouts page.

Baccarat or Casino War?
Both, and the split is exact. Dragon Tiger's mechanic is Casino War: one card to each position, higher card wins, ties handled by a special rule. Its presentation is baccarat: the layout with two named positions and a Tie box, the shoe of eight decks, the bead roads and big-eye roads that players use to chase patterns, and a Tie bet that pays long odds. Two Cambodian operators describe the game in precisely these terms on their own sites, and Evolution filed it as a baccarat variant in the report that announced it.
The practical consequences run in baccarat's favor on presentation and against the player on mathematics. Baccarat's Banker bet gives the house 1.06%; Dragon Tiger's main bets give it 3.73% on a half-back table and 7.47% otherwise, and the rounds are faster. The game is not a simplified baccarat so much as a faster, more expensive one wearing baccarat's clothes. Why that matters at the table is the subject of Winning Strategies.
