What Is Documented

Most pages about Dragon Tiger's history are invented: Tang Dynasty origins, painted tiles, world championships, an 18th-century Macau casino scene that did not exist. None of it cites a source, because there is none. This is what can be traced to a regulator, an operator, a game studio, or a dated statement by its author.

Read across that table and the shape of the game's history is clear: it is a short history, and mostly an online one. The first document naming the game is a 2012 analysis; the first rulebook published by a regulator is Singapore's, for a casino table at Marina Bay Sands from July 2013; the first studio to announce a live table did so in early 2018; every dated milestone since is a studio release or a regulator approving a resort variant. Whatever happened on card tables before 2012 left no record that a regulator, operator or academic has published.

The Cambodia Claim

What the ethnographic literature does show is telling in a different way. Field studies of Cambodia's border-casino towns, of Vietnamese gamblers crossing into Bavet, and of Thai gamblers in Poipet list the games on the floor as baccarat, blackjack, roulette and slots. Baccarat dominates every account. Dragon Tiger does not appear in the studies we located, which does not prove it was absent from those floors, only that nobody who wrote them down saw fit to name it.

Where It Is Dealt on Land

Presence today is documented, because casinos publish their game lists. Three operators publish Dragon Tiger rules on their own websites, and their rules do not agree with one another.

Two Cambodian rooms on the same border disagree about which card is highest. That is what an undocumented game looks like from the inside: the rules travel by dealer, not by rulebook. Online, by contrast, every studio ranks the Ace low.

Macau is the notable absence. Under the Macau Gaming Law a concessionaire may offer only games on the pre-approved list or games the Government has since approved, with each game's rules approved by the Secretary for Economy and Finance on the DICJ's recommendation at a concessionaire's request. The 32-game pre-approved list, as restated in a 2019 Practical Law survey by the Macau firm MdME, runs from Baccarat and Casino War to Fantan, Cussec, Fortune 8 and Dragon/Phoenix, and Dragon Tiger is not on it under any spelling. Dragon/Phoenix is a different baccarat-family game. Macau's regulator publishes revenue by game type each quarter, and Dragon Tiger is not among the game types in any year from 2005 through 2026. Baccarat accounts for most of that revenue: our sister site's Baccarat Revenue Tracker, which computes its shares from the same quarterly statistics, puts baccarat, VIP and mass-market together, at between 83.7% and 85.6% of Macau's revenue from games of fortune in every quarter from Q1 2023 to Q2 2026.

Singapore is the one place where we have found a regulator publishing the two-card game's rulebook. The Gambling Regulatory Authority's site carries Dragon Tiger rules for Marina Bay Sands effective July 17, 2013: four to eight decks, one card face up to Dragon and then to Tiger, Ace lowest, no ranking of suits, Tie at 11 to 1, Big (8 or higher) and Small (6 or lower) at even money with the 7 losing both, and a layout that prints “Dragon and Tiger Bets Lose 50%” under the Tie box. There is no Suited Tie. The document does not name the authority that approved it in 2013, and the rules permit a range of decks without saying how many the casino used. The regulator lists the game under Revoked Games, effective until noon on May 20, 2020; the listing gives no reason. Eighteen months after that game ended, the regulator approved another for the other casino. From 8:00 a.m. on November 15, 2021 its list for Resorts World Sentosa carried a Dragon Tiger with a rulebook of its own: four to ten decks, suits ranked Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds so that only two identical cards tie, Dragon and Tiger bets returned in full when they do, no Tie bet at all, and a win with an 8 paid at 1 to 2. By our calculation that main bet costs 2.19%, against 3.73% on a standard half-back table. The game is not on any of the regulator's lists today, and its Revoked Games page for the casino is empty, so when it ended is not published; nor is whether a table was ever dealt. The rules, the archive captures they come from and the price of every bet are in Singapore's Second Dragon Tiger.

The name also travels without the game, and Singapore shows that too. Since December 7, 2023 Marina Bay Sands has had approved rules for a “Dragon Tiger Baccarat”, joined by Immortal Dragon Tiger Baccarat on July 28, 2025 and Rising Dragon Tiger Baccarat on May 4, 2026, each with a no-commission form, six titles in all. Hoiana, the integrated resort near Hoi An in central Vietnam, publishes rules for a Dragon Tiger Baccarat of its own and for a sister game, Hoiana Tiger Baccarat: both are full baccarat, with Player and Banker hands and third-card draws, in which “Dragon” and “Tiger” are side bets on winning totals of 7 and 6. The two-card Dragon Tiger is not among the twelve table games Hoiana lists on its casino page, at a floor the resort says holds more than 140 tables, and this in the country that Ha Tien Vegas and Lucky Ruby, both on the Vietnamese border, publish their Dragon Tiger rules beside. A website list shows what an operator chose to publish, not everything on the floor, but a table called Dragon Tiger is not always this game; read the layout. Studio Variants Compared

Online Dragon Tiger differs more between studios than baccarat does. The same bet can carry a 10.36% edge at one table and 32.77% at the next, purely on the Tie payout. Rules below are from each studio's own page; “not stated” means the page is silent. Edges are computed at eight decks and explained in full on the Odds & Payouts page.

Where these tables may legally be dealt and played is changing quickly. Recent changes covered by our news desk:

• The Philippine regulator's approved-games lists name live Dragon Tiger under seven brands, while the Anti-POGO Act of 2025 banned offshore gaming operators there.
• Cambodia, the one country whose casinos publish Dragon Tiger rules, suspended online gambling streamed from its casinos; after the September 30, 2026 deadline its state news agency reported that 24 casinos had stopped streaming.
• Play971, the UAE's first licensed online casino, deals Dragon Tiger on four Live88 tables.
• Police and courts in India, China and Thailand named the game in four cases in 2026.

Baccarat or Casino War?

Both, and the split is exact. Dragon Tiger's mechanic is Casino War: one card to each position, higher card wins, ties handled by a special rule. Its presentation is baccarat: the layout with two named positions and a Tie box, the shoe of eight decks, the bead roads and big-eye roads that players use to chase patterns, and a Tie bet that pays long odds. Two Cambodian operators describe the game in precisely these terms on their own sites, and Evolution filed it as a baccarat variant in the report that announced it.

The practical consequences run in baccarat's favor on presentation and against the player on mathematics. Dragon Tiger's main bets give the house 3.73% on a half-back table and 7.47% otherwise, more than three times the edge on baccarat's Banker bet, and the rounds are faster.
