Where Did Dragon Tiger Come From? We Checked Every Source the Internet Cites, and Found One Rumor

Ask a search engine where Dragon Tiger came from and the answer arrives with confidence: Cambodia, early 2000s, border casinos, a simplified baccarat for junket players. We spent a research sweep trying to find the document behind that sentence. There isn't one. What exists instead is a shorter, stranger, better-documented history than the one being repeated.

Following the Citation

Google's AI Overview, asked when Dragon Tiger started, answered in September 2026 that it "was created in Cambodia and popularized in land-based casinos throughout Southeast Asia around the early 2000s." Its citation was a June 2025 blog post on the website of a Spanish art gallery, a domain evidently repurposed for gambling content. Another AI assistant gave the same answer with the same source. The gallery page, when we tried to read it, redirected in a loop.

That is the pattern everywhere the claim appears: affiliate sites citing one another, or citing nothing. One page assigns the game Han Dynasty roots and Tang Dynasty tournaments; another puts it in an 18th-century Macau casino scene, a century before Macau licensed its first casino. None of them names a regulator, an operator or a study.

The earliest datable ancestor of the Cambodia story is more modest. On June 30, 2012, Michael Shackleford published a Dragon Tiger analysis on Wizard of Odds and wrote that he had never seen the game, even in Macau, but that it was "rumored to be found in Cambodia." Within a day a reader on his forum reported the game at a border casino, Ha Tien Vegas. Over the following decade the word "rumored" fell away and a date was attached.

What the Regulators Say

Macau, the world's largest baccarat market and the natural home for a baccarat-family game, never approved it. The pre-approved list of table games under Macau's gaming law, restated in a 2019 Practical Law survey, runs from Baccarat and Blackjack through Casino War, Fantan and Cussec to a game called Dragon/Phoenix, and does not include Dragon Tiger. The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau's quarterly revenue tables, which listed 27 game types for 2005 to 2010 and list 16 for 2021 to 2026, do not include it in any year. Shackleford's remark that he had never seen it in Macau was accurate.

Where regulators have put the name on paper, it is recent. The earliest we have found is in Singapore: the Gambling Regulatory Authority's site carries rules for the two-card Dragon Tiger at Marina Bay Sands effective July 17, 2013, with four to eight decks, the Ace low, a Tie paying 11 to 1 and half the stake lost on a tie, and lists the game as revoked from noon on May 20, 2020. That is one year after the Wizard of Odds page and five before the first live studio table. The same casino has had approved rules for a "Dragon Tiger Baccarat" since December 7, 2023, a baccarat variant with Dragon and Tiger side bets rather than the two-card game, and the regulator now lists six baccarat titles carrying the name. The Philippines' PAGCOR lists a "Dragon & Tiger" electronic table among its approved online games. None of them says anything about origin. Vietnam's Hoiana resort publishes rules for a “Dragon Tiger Baccarat” of the same kind as Singapore's, and a sister game, Hoiana Tiger Baccarat: full baccarat with Dragon and Tiger side bets on winning totals. The two-card game is not among the twelve table games Hoiana lists on its casino page, at a floor it says holds more than 140 tables. What the Studios Say

The documented history of Dragon Tiger is an online history. Evolution's Year-End Report 2017, published February 15, 2018, announced the company was "strengthening our Baccarat portfolio with two new variants, No Commission Baccarat and Dragon Tiger," for launch during 2018. OneTouch released an RNG version on December 23, 2019. Pragmatic Play launched a live table on April 28, 2021, with the most complete public rulebook of any studio. Evolution added Lightning Dragon Tiger in April 2024, Super Speed Dragon Tiger in August 2025 and Dragon Tiger Phoenix on September 17, 2025. Every date is from the studio itself.

Mechanically, the lineage is not in doubt and requires no Cambodian origin. Dragon Tiger is Casino War, the one-card-each, higher-wins game that BET Technology of Reno brought to Nevada floors in 1994, laid out on a baccarat table with a baccarat-style Tie bet. Two Cambodian operators describe it in exactly those words on their own websites.

What the Cambodian Casinos Say

Presence, unlike origin, is documented, because casinos publish game lists. Ha Tien Vegas, in Kampot province on the Vietnam border, publishes Dragon Tiger rules that rank the Ace as the highest card. Lucky Ruby Border Casino in Svay Rieng province, at the Prey Vor–Moc Hoa crossing, publishes rules with eight decks and the Ace low, as every online studio plays it. Deltin's casinos in Goa, India, publish six to eight decks, Ace low, half the stake returned on a tie and a Tie bet paying 10:1. Three operators, three rulebooks. That is what a game without a governing body looks like from inside.

The academic literature on Cambodia's casino towns, of which there is a fair amount, does not help the origin story. Field studies of Poipet and Bavet, of Vietnamese gamblers crossing the border and Thai gamblers heading east, list the games on the floor as baccarat, blackjack, roulette and slots. Baccarat dominates every account. Dragon Tiger does not appear in the studies we located. That does not prove it was absent from those floors; it means nobody who wrote them down saw fit to name it.

The Honest Version

Dragon Tiger's pre-online history is undocumented. It is dealt today in Cambodia, India and in every major live studio, and it has been analyzed since at least 2012. The Cambodia origin may be true; nothing we can cite says so, and the sentence that everyone repeats began life as a hedge. Why It Matters for Dragon Tiger Players

A game with no rulebook of its own is a game whose rules change by studio and by casino, which is exactly what the Dragon Tiger variants table shows. The tie payout, the tie rule and even the rank of the Ace are set by whoever deals the table. Knowing that the history is thin is the best argument for reading the rules screen every time.
